Galle Heritage

Galle remains the best example of a fortified city built by Europeans in south and south East Asia. The present district of Gale formed a part of the ancient kingdom of Ruhunu Rata this district covers 1635 sq. km and population over 1.03 million . In 14 th century Galle was an international harbor and trade center in Ceylon. Galle harbor is we known even today as a reserve of assorted medicinal trees and plants having miraculous healing power. There is the esplanade and the international cricket stadium. Galle fort covers an area of 36 hectares enclosed with museums, a clock tower, churches, mosques, a light house, around 400 private dwellings also inside the fort. Another important historic place in the Galle fort is the Dutch Reformed church. Many people visit the Galle city to see all these historical places.
